Career Builder Survey Show Importance of Background Screening Process with Candidates

  August 24, 2017

It’s easy to forget that while employers are evaluating candidates for a position at their company, well qualified candidates are engaged in their own evaluation of the employer. Moving through the hiring process is generally the first time a candidate gets to form a picture of what it would be like to work for an employer. So, not only is it important for the employer who utilizes background screening services to get a clear and accurate picture of the candidate, the process itself needs to convey efficiency, fairness, and a strong company culture. Failure to do those things increases the risk that a well qualified candidate walks away.

Recently, Career Builder released a survey in which the results backed up this contention:

  • 56% of candidates think less of a company if they have a poor experience with their HR technology.
  • 21% of employers have lost candidates after an offer has been accepted because the background screening took too long.
  • 20% walked away from a job offer because they had a poor experience with the screening.

How can employers be sure to put their best foot forward with a candidate they are strongly considering? Here are a few ideas:

  • Partner with a provider who is accredited with the National Association of Professional Background Screeners. (NAPBS) A provider who is accredited with the NAPBS has proven to follow all relevant laws and regulations, as well as industry best practices. This accreditation sets them apart from many other background screening companies.
  • Set realistic expectations concerning turnaround time on background screens and remain transparent with client or candidate if any delays occur.
  • Continue to monitor the screening process and communicate with your background screening provider to ensure the process if efficient and accurate as possible.
