Indiana Passes Act For School Background Checks And Child Protection

The State of Indiana has taken measures to enhance background check requirements for school employees that include; teachers, administrators, coaches and support staff. Indiana House Enrolled Act 1079 took effect July 1, 2017 and applies to school corporations and parochial schools. The legislation also tightens the timeframe for when applicants need to have a criminal background check and child protection index check completed.

A quick summary of Act 1079 requirements that impact Indiana school district employees:

• Within 30 days of employment — must undergo an enhanced criminal background check.
• Within 60 days of employment — must undergo an enhanced child protection index check.
• Every 5 years — school districts must conduct enhanced criminal background checks on all employees.
