EEOC Releases New Strategic Enforcement Plan for 2017 – 2021

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently released their Strategic Enforcement Plan for fiscal years 2017 – 2021. Looking very much like the 2013-2016 strategic plan, this new document reaffirms the EEOC’s commitment to equal opportunity in the workplace.

The new strategic plan continues to prioritize the following:

  • Eliminating barriers in recruitment and hiring
  • Protecting immigrant, migrant, and other vulnerable workers
  • Addressing emerging and developing issues
  • Enforcing equal pay laws for all workers
  • Preserving access to the legal system
  • Preventing harassment through systemic enforcement and targeted outreach

Emerging areas also identified by the EEOC are requiring additional scrutiny deal with issues related to complex employment relationships in the 21st century workplace, and backlash discrimination against individuals who are Muslim or Sikh, or persons of Arab, Middle Eastern or South Asian descent. Also the lack of diversity in technology fields and the increased use of data driven screening tools.

This new strategic plan is a good reminder to employers of what the EEOC looks at and scrutinizes when it comes to workplace discrimination. It is more important than ever for employers to review their hiring policies and ensure they comply with all relevant laws, FCRA regulations, and EEOC guidelines.
