Theft at Assisted Living Facility Raises Questions about Need for Comprehensive Background Checks

Employee theft and robbery is a major concern for companies around the country. It’s important for employers to provide a safe workplace for their employees, establish a productive workforce, and grow as a company. A comprehensive background screen that includes a multi-county search based on an extensive address history should be a major component in achieving company goals.

One interesting example of where a multi-county search may have helped avoid employee theft occurred at Willowbrook Place Assisted Living in Thiensville, Wisconsin. According to police, more than 2,000 items were stolen from the facility by a former maintenance worker. The worker was eventually arrested and charged with stealing items such as valuable antiques and expensive jewelry. While at the preliminary hearing, the worker pleaded not guilty and claimed that all the items found were either given to him or things that he had dug out of the trash. However, the police had found his explanations to be extremely unconvincing. In fact, a collector discovered that many of her lost items and antiques were being sold on eBay. Even though police have managed to return some of the collector’s items, some were unable to be tracked down. The police are also in the process of supplying warrants to anyone who may have purchased any stolen items.

Surprisingly, Willowbrook confirmed that they ran background checks on all employees including the worker in question. His report came back clear with no sign of a criminal record. However, it did turn out that this man did have various convictions in other states.

This is an example where a multi-county search based on address history could have potentially uncovered the previous convictions. To prevent situations like WIllowbrook’s from occurring, companies need to have a clear understanding on what comprises a comprehensive search.
