EEOC Raising Awareness Regarding Religious Discrimination in the Workplace

On July 22 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced they are altering the way they collect data for someone who claims that they have been discriminated against based on their religion. The commission is now going to be requesting that individuals supply more specific information about their religious beliefs. Each specific religion will now be classified as its own category instead of some religions falling under the “other” category which the EEOC believes is not very helpful.

Also, the commission has released a fact sheet to inform young employees of their rights and responsibilities under federal laws that prohibit religious discrimination in the workplace. These announcements are meant to increase the accuracy of the reporting and to raise awareness of religious discrimination.

Ever since the terrorist attack of 9/11, there have been a number amount of incidents reported involving violence and discrimination against specific ethnic groups. Following 2001, the amount of religious discrimination claims that were filed drastically increased. The primary issues surrounding religious discrimination claims include discharge, harassment, terms of conditions of employment, and reasonable accommodation.

Religious discrimination in the workplace is something that is not tolerated by the EEOC. It is extremely important that employers are aware of their responsibilities in creating a safe workplace free of discrimination.
